(MCALLEN) — The McAllen Bulldogs overcame an 11-point deficit and went on to defeat Mission High 49-45 on Tuesday night at McAllen High School.

The fifth ranked Bulldogs ended their two game losing streak and improve to 5-2 in District 30-5A with the win.

Mission (2-5, 12-14) looked solid in the first half as they were hot from the three-point line and took a 25-16 lead into the half. The Eagles connected on 5-three pointers through the first two quarters with three of them coming in the second quarter alone. Ricky Martinez led the Eagles offense in the first half as he connected on three of his four-three point shots and finished the evening with a game-high 16 points.

“I think the boys were kind of shocked at how well the Eagles came out shooting the ball and we took a while to get going,” said McAllen head coach Ryan Flores. “In the first half, we were just settling for outside shots and were not aggressive toward the basket. Also, we didn’t go for the higher percentage shots in the first two quarters of play.”

(DONNA) – When Donna North head basketball coach Jose Armando Perez took the job two years ago after working as a varsity assistant under Brian Molina at Harlingen South High School, he knew that he was going to have to literally build the program from the ground up.

Not only did he have to work on building the program, but also had to mold some of his kids into playing the sport of basketball since some of them had never stepped on the hardwood.

Such was the case for senior Richard Cervantes.

donna north feature-3 copyCervantes transferred to North during his junior year and decided to give basketball a shot while at registration.

(MCALLEN) — The Rowe Lady Warriors moved another step closer to the District 30-6A title after defeating the McAllen Bulldogs 38-21 on Tuesday night.

With the win, the seventh ranked Lady Warriors improve to 9-1 and are currently riding a seven game win streak. Rowe controls it’s own destiny as they can win the outright title if they can win their next two remaining games on the schedule.

“Obviously our girls stepped it up again defensively,” said Rowe Head Coach Raul Vega. “You have to fear their three-point shooters and I think we did a good job of getting out there and forcing them to get a little deeper. Anytime they tried to dribble penetrate, we gave a lot of good help defense tonight.”

McHi took the early lead 9-6 after one quarter of play. However, the Lady Bulldogs struggled on offense in the second quarter as the only two baskets scored for the Lady Bulldogs were on a pair of three-pointers by Erika Mora. Mora was the top scorer for McHi as she totaled eight points on the night.
